Reading John
These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
This is how John describes his purpose in writing Jesus' story. It was first written almost two thousand years ago in a time that was, in some ways, very different from ours. But in a lot of ways, the world hasn't changed all that much. We get the sense that things aren't the way they should be. We look for things like hope and love, but more often we find disappointment and loss. Our human experience feels a lot more like death than it does life.
When John starts his book by writing, "In the beginning," he's trying to remind us of a time when things were better, before everything went wrong with the world. The words are taken from the very first book of the Bible, Genesis. There we read about a garden where God walked with humans and how sin was a stranger. The book goes on to say how humans threw it all away, a decision that has plagued the world ever since.
But John is also trying to tell us that the time coming when life will start feeling like life again. Reading this book, you'll find God once again walking on the earth, working to get rid of sin and death. In the end we find that this life is available to each of us, no matter what. It is God's gift to us.
John isn't a very big book, but there is a lot to take in. You'll want to read it a couple of times to really take it all in, each time reading it more carefully. Below is a reading plan that will help you finish it in eight days.

Leamos a Juan
Pero éstas se han escrito para que ustedes crean que Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, y para que al creer en su nombre tengan vida.
Con estas palabras Juan define el propósito que tiene para escribir la historia de Jesús. Se escribió hace casi dos mil años en una época que, en ciertas maneras, era diferente a la nuestra. Si bien es cierto que en muchas formas el mundo tampoco ha cambiado tanto. Nos parece que muchas cosas no son como debían ser. Buscamos esperanza y amor, pero en la mayoría de los casos encontramos desengaño y quebranto. Nuestra experiencia humana parece ser más de muerte que de vida.
Cuando Juan comienza su libro con las palabras "En el principio," trata de llevarnos a la época cuando todo fue mejor, antes de que el mundo se echara a perder. Esas palabras son tomadas del primer libro de la Biblia, el libro de Génesis. Allí leemos acerca de un jardín donde Dios caminaba con los seres humanos y el pecado no se conocía. El libro sigue contándonos de cómo los seres humanos destruyeron todo aquello, una decisión que ha plagado al mundo desde entonces.
Pero Juan también trata de decirnos que vendrá el tiempo cuando la vida comenzará a sentirse de nuevo como vida. Lee este libro y verás que Dios otra vez camina en la Tierra, trabaja para eliminar el pecado y la muerte. Al final descubrimos que esta vida está a nuestra disposición, sin importar lo que seamos. Es un regalo de Dios para todos nosotros.
Juan no es un libro muy grande, pero tiene mucho contenido. Tal vez tengas que leerlo un par de veces para entenderlo bien; cada vez que lo leas, hazlo con mucho detenimiento. A continuación hay un plan de lectura que te ayudará a terminarlo en ocho días.
